All great outfits come to life in the same place, our closets. Whether it’s a spacious custom walk in (dreams!), or a single clothes rack alongside your bed, properly organizing your dressing area is the first step to style. When we were in the midst of renovations and I had no closet, I found myself wearing jeans and a white tee day after day (actually, my sister found me doing this and basically told me to stop, but nonetheless, haha). While jeans and a tee is a winning combination, it didn’t exactly leave me feeling excited about my look when I repeated it for day 4. So, as soon as we got into our new place I got to work turning our spare bedroom into a retreat full of girly touches where I could primp and prep for each day. I’m so happy to be sharing it now, along with the 5 elements that turn any area into a dressing space dreams are made of.
Clothing racks (similar here) for all my pieces that require hanging is my favourite closet switch up. Having my pieces out in the open instead of hidden behind doors instantly gets me brainstorming about what to wear next. I organize everything from dark to light, and then use an additional rack to house any seasonal pieces that I’m currently relying on.
Incorporate shelving for stacking sweaters (my favourite fall picks here and here), denim, and t-shirts according to colour. It’s pretty to look at, and helps me easily navigate my closet and find what I’m looking for (which is admittedly usually a white t-shirt!).
When it comes to shoe organization, I like to think of it less as storing and more as displaying! Shoes are definitely the part of my wardrobe where the most variation comes into play, and I love being able to see them all at once and assess which ones will work best each day. I’m always reaching for these wrap around ballet flats (similar here and investment option here). If you’re short on shelf space, sheepskins like these are a soft place to land for your perfect pairs.
Ample lighting ensures you can properly see your clothes (no more mistaking those navy stripes for black!) and gives you the opportunity to add even more personality to your closet. Go for a glamorous chandelier (budget friendly gold option here) or a contemporary spotlight floor lamp like this one, or both! In any case, the more lighting the better.
Don’t hide your pretty baubles away. Exposed jewelry storage, whether it’s on trays, in display cases (similar to my gold version here), or in small dishes (love this set) adds an element of sparkle to your space. Just like a bit of glimmer is the finishing touch to an outfit, it’s also the icing on the cake for interiors. Plus, the more visible your best pieces are, the more likely you are to actually wear them regularly!
